Eggstreme Farming Licenses Guide: Order, Costs and What They Unlock

How licenses work in Eggstreme Farming: you can't buy animals without the matching license, costs observed from ~$40 white up through duck tiers, and the purchase order that pays off fastest.

The license is Eggstreme Farming’s real progression currency. Money buys birds; licenses decide which birds exist for you. Here’s how the system works and the order that launch-week runs converged on.

What a license actually does

  • No license, no animals. The market’s animal tab only stocks species/breeds you hold the license for. The objective list pushes your first one immediately: “Buy the license to produce white chicken eggs.”
  • Licenses are one-time purchases from the market’s Licenses tab. They don’t expire and don’t need renewing.
  • They cost more than the animals. The white chicken egg license ran about $40 at the start — more than the white chicken itself. Budget license + first bird + feed + a pack of trays as the real “unlock cost” of any new egg line.
  • License purchases are objectives too — the game queues “buy the X license” tasks constantly, which is your hint ladder even if you ignore everything else.

Exact goose and turkey license prices weren’t captured in launch week — the species rows themselves gate behind player level first (demo UI showed geese near level 30). See geese & turkeys for what’s confirmed there.

The purchase order that works

1. White chicken eggs (day 1). Non-negotiable first purchase; the tutorial walks you into it.

2. Brown chicken eggs (~$45, days 2–4). The single best money license in the early game. Brown large trays outsell white trays by a wide margin (launch trays went for $37.50–$45), and the brown breed lineup — black, rust, black-and-white — gives you three upgrade paths. Buy it the day you can afford license + one brown-layer bird.

3. Blue chicken eggs (week 1+). Buy when cash is comfortable. Blue birds are mid stats at a premium price; the license is progression, not profit.

4. Duck licenses. Note the trap: duck licenses are per egg type — white duck eggs, brown duck eggs and green-headed duck eggs are three separate licenses. If you want the brown duck’s large eggs, that’s the only license you need. See ducks guide.

5. Goose and turkey lines. Endgame; gated by level and cost. Plan for them in the farm progression ladder.

Rules of thumb

  • A license should pay for itself within a day or two of trays. The brown license at $45 versus ~$30/white-tray income: one good day covers it, then it’s upside forever.
  • Never buy a license while broke. License + zero animals = money that produces nothing. Keep enough behind the license for at least one bird, feed, and trays — the classic sequence is license → bird → feed → trays in one shopping run.
  • Don’t skip tiers. Blue before brown, or ducks before the chicken lines are stable, spreads your money thin across half-working production lines. One profitable line funds the next.
  • Watch the market’s lock reasons. Locked items tell you why they’re locked (license vs level). If it says license, that’s your next purchase; if it says level, that’s an XP problem, not a money problem — go collect eggs and clean pens.

FAQ

Do I need a license to sell eggs? No — the sell machine takes any eggs you have. Licenses gate buying the animals that lay them.

Can I sell a license back? No evidence of that in the launch build. Treat every license as permanent.

Do pens need licenses? No — pens rent by species row (chicken pen 1, duck pen, etc.) from the management screen, separate from egg licenses.

The game keeps telling me to buy licenses I can’t afford. That’s the objective list rushing you again. Its timing is a suggestion; your bank balance is the real gate.
