Eggstreme Farming Ducks Guide: Breeds, Licenses and Duck Pen Tips

Ducks are the first species you unlock beyond chickens, and they run on the same engine — license, rent a pen, feed, collect, sell — with three twists: their own licenses, their own trays, and their own price line at the vending machine.

The three duck breeds

Egg sizes follow the same half-full/full icon convention as chickens. The brown duck’s license costs more than the white duck’s — in demo footage a player reasoned that “a more expensive license means more expensive eggs,” and the large brown duck eggs bear that out.

Duck licenses come in flavors

Unlike chickens (one license per color line), ducks are licensed per egg type: white duck eggs, brown duck eggs and green-headed duck eggs are separate licenses, each gating its breeds at the market. If you only want the brown duck’s large eggs, you only need the brown duck license. Costs run higher than the chicken licenses — demo footage showed duck licenses costing roughly three trays’ worth of income.

The duck pen

Rented like chicken pens via the management screen — about $3.50/day, six-bird capacity.
The duck row sits apart from the chicken row; every pen has a small pond the ducks wander to (cosmetic as far as anyone can tell — no pond-dependent behavior observed).
Ducks are, if anything, more enthusiastic layers than the stats suggest — multiple players remarked on how quickly eggs pile up in a full duck pen during demo play.
Feeding uses duck food from the food tab, not chicken feed — each species line has its own feed products, so don’t bulk-buy chicken feed for a duck pen.

Duck trays are their own thing

The trap that catches everyone: duck eggs don’t fit chicken trays. Trays are sold per species — chicken egg trays, duck egg trays, and later goose and turkey equivalents — plus the dedicated golden tray. Duck trays cost slightly more than the chicken ones. Buying a stack of trays before checking the species label is a rite of passage; the wrong-species trays aren’t wasted (they hold chicken eggs fine), but they’re not what you needed. Duck eggs themselves can be white, brown or pale green on the ground — the green ones belong to the green-headed duck.

Are ducks worth it vs more chickens?

The honest launch-week read: ducks are a diversification play, not a straight upgrade. Can ducks and chickens share a pen? No — pens are per-species rows. Buy the duck pen rental; the chicken pen won’t take them.
